Don't forget about your chest and neck!
Nurse Hadassah shares her expertise on why we need extra protection for our neck and chest area.
Most patients prioritise looking after their face, but the neck and chest area are often overlooked. Unfortunately, these areas can show signs of ageing at a much quicker rate than our faces.
There are less support structures in these regions which means that the 3 layers of skin are much more susceptible to damage. The neck and chest are often forgotten about until the damage has already taken place.
During consultation with our patients, we often discuss the intrinsic and extrinsic ageing factors and how we best manage these.
EXTRINSIC AGEING - WHAT IS IT?
Extrinsic ageing refers to premature skin ageing which is caused by environmental factors. These incude:
- UV Radiation (photo-ageing)
- Lifestyle factors including: Smoking, alcohol, poor diet, stress and exercise
INTRINSIC AGEING - WHAT IS IT?
This type of ageing is inevitable! This is the natural ageing process that occurs as we age and is controlled by genetics, the body's biological functions, cell variations, and hormonal changes.
WHY DOES THE NECK AGE FASTER THAN THE FACE?
The skin on the neck is much more fragile and prone to ageing, we have less muscle and fat, which leaves the 3 layers of skin the main areas to consider.
The 3 layers of skin are the the dermis, epidermis and hypodermis. As we age, we will lose collage and elastin at a rapid rate, the skin will have a slower cellular turnover, there will be melanocyte changes which makes the skin more translucent and cause skin discolouration. All of these changes lead to skin damage.
WHICH ARE THE BEST TREATMENTS TO TARGET THE CHEST AND NECK AREA?
Protecting the skin from the sun and UV rays is essential, an SPF 50 should be worn everyday. Amongst this protection the best treatments to target the neck and chest area are:
Polynucleotides
Polyneucleotides are a regenerative treatment that utilises DNA fragments to stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and promote tissue regeneration. This treatment tackles ageing concerns and regenerates the skin from within.
Profhilo & Skin Boosters
Skin boosters deliver deep hydration and essential nutrients to the skin improving skin texture, elasticity, and overall radiance. Unlike traditional skincare products that sit on the surface, skin boosters are injected into the skin’s deeper layers to provide long-lasting benefits.
HIFU
HIFU (High-intensity focused ultrasound) is often referred to as the non-surgical facelift. It’s a non-invasive, clinically proven treatment which helps to lift, tighten and firm the skin by stimulating collagen production.
Morpheus8
Morpheus8 combines skin needling with radio frequency energy to tighten, contour and rejuvenate the skin. It is effective in reducing wrinkles, improving skin texture and radiance.
